engine swap?

Post by 72bumbee »

how tough would it be to swap out my 360 motor with a 460? both connected to a c-6 tranny. Would the mounts all line up, or is there something I'm missing?

Very basically.

You will need the engine perches from a later truck with a 460 as well as a C6 to fit the 460.

Also found a 390, that said it was in good running condition too. both have a C-6 tranny hooked to them. I was thinking of picking up an extra motor to rebuild this winter, so when the 360 in my truck finally poops, I can swap out easilly... Maybe??
Thanks, Steve

I assume "perches" means engine mounts? Got a buddy of mine trying to talk me into buying a reman. from FORD, but it sounds like he spent 3 grand for his, and nobody has that kind of dough for an old work truck!

So for ease, I should stick with another 360, or 390 as they are the same engine?

Yes, they are the same family (FE).

There is an awful lot of information here on FE's as well as 460 swaps.

But yes it is always easiest to go back with what is already there...

If you go for the 390 make sure it is actually a 390.

Lots of 360's magically gain an additional 30 cubic inches when it comes time to sell them.

I have one of those. :x Fortunately, I traded for the truck's chassis and running gear (highboy) and got the motor as a side effect.

If you have the money and the time the 460 would be a nice swap, but if you want to
do a quick in and out the 390 would be better. I considered the same swap but can't
have my truck down for very long and I don't really need the extra power a 460 could give
so a built 390 would be my choice.
