Well My son was 16 yesterday and got his license today. I was working and my wife took him to the DMV. She had him stop and filled it up for him and he dropped her off at home. That was 2pm and he got home at 9:55. He has a 10pm curfew for a month. I asked him how much gas he had left and he said 7/8 of a tank but he also said he drove all over town all day. I told him it usually didn't move until you had used a 1/4 tank or so. We agreed to buy him 1 tank of gas a week and the rest was up to him. That will get him him to school and work all week but not much running around. I had the mileage back up to 16 something in the city/freeway with real easy driving so maybe he was paying attention to me. He said everyone loves his truck and all the girls slow down to wave and smile. He also said cruising slow or at the speed limit makes the girls look more I need some help here as I know I will slip and call it mine now and again but it's his for 2 years until I buy him a gas mileage champ for college. Sure was quiet around here this evening, this letting go thing is new to me and it's going to take some getting used to.
My son turned 16 a couple of months ago, but doesn't have his license yet. We have been working on his 41 Chevy, and I keep telling him there is no sense in getting one untill his car is ready. I am putting it off as long as I can. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Congrats to you and you son both CJ, that's is a milestone in his life that he'll never forget...I would bet that not one of his friends has anything like (as cool as!!!) that truck, and he's worked on it with you, right? Vehicles tend to look real different in the eyes of someone who has wrenched on them.
I can't imagine what the letting go thing is like, I have never been on that end of that situation. Looking back I see that my Dad was trying to protect me from myself, through the benefit of his experience, but it sure didn't seem like that at the time, and neither of us handled it well. Hopefully it will go better for you and your son, I sure wish you the best!

My daughter turned 16 in February...but over here in Germany, you can't get your license until your 18...so the next time we go home on leave, I have to take her to the license office and get it done. She is driving (figuratively) us crazy. My oldest boy is 14 and already chomping at the bit.
Update, 2 days and 16 gallons. Yesterday he went job hunting. His High School has a list of companies that sign up with the high school offering jobs. He worked for me doing some side work on the 4th so that will keep him in gas for a couple weeks at the rate he is burning it. Trucks doing great, he's doing great. I guess it's just me who has the problem

Steve, Call your DMV in your home state or look them up online. In Texas, a 16 year old has to have had his beginners license a minimum of 6 months prior to getting his license if under the age of 18. They also must have completed drivers education and have a form from school stating they are attending school regularly.
The drivers ed. course can be a home school course or a regular course through a drivers ed. school.
Texas has the graduated license plan here. My son has many restrictions on his. If I remember correctly, he loses restrictions every 6 months until he is 18. At 18 he receives his unlimited, full drivers license. This is if he has no tickets or accidents. This system seems to be cutting the 16 year old death rate among new drivers.
I'd hate for you and your daughter to arrive at home expecting to walk in and get it, then be turned away because of unfulfilled state requirements. Good luck.

Drivers test was fun. Took it with a state cop that had failed three girls right before me. Oh, it was in a 91 F150, ex cab, 8 foot bed, M5OD manual. Cop was like "are you serious, I'm not moving the cones." "I figured that so I left the trailer at home." heheh
Goober got me on a turnsignal that canceled on a turn, but otherwize nailed it perfect.
well hey at least he ain't got no girls chasing him to keep him out all night. when it got mine just over a year ago. i was told that i had to pay my own insurance and gas even if i didn't have a job. otherwise i couldn't drive. i would just make sure he knows what a responsability it is and respects it.
oh i to did notice an increase of looking girls when i drive my 67 around town

You know its all gonna turn out fine. We bought our oldest his first truck so he could get himself back and forth to school. The truck was a '67 F250 and that was nine years ago and he still has it. He runs his own concrete pump company now and has had ALOT of different rides but the old Ford has a soft spot in his heart...
