need a little bit of help....because i'm retarded
Howdy all,
I am having some issues with my truck, and i cant for the life of me figure out whats goin on, even though I know its somethin obvious. the other day i was on my way to work when the engine just died on me... I tried crankin her up, and the motor would spin but not turn over. When I got her back home, I tired again, but it seemed like there wasn't any gas gettin in. Checked the fuel filter, it was a mess so I replaced that, and still its not turnin over. checked the fuel lines, and they are all clear. Put a little gas straight down into the carb, it started right up but obviously didnt keep running. checked the fuel pump, and the diaphram is still intact and its functional. then took off the carb and ran air through all the fuel jets, and none of them are obstructed... I know i'm missing something obvious, but it has been a long ass week and i'm firing on fewer cylinders than my truck is right now.
Anybody got any advice?

i sfuel gettign to the pump? is fuel getting from the pump to carb. my guess is bad fuel pump or a hole in the line not lettignt he fuel pump suck up fuel. right now. my truck does the same thing with a pin hole in the line below the cab from the tank. it will only suck air through the pin hole.

well, i also tried fillin the bowl that the filter sits in, and clearing all fuel out of the fuel line form the pump to the carb. tried starting it up, and then removed that fuel line afterwards, and there was some fuel in it...didnt seem like much though

take the fuel line off the carb and run it into a bucket. then crank the eninge. the fuel should pump out of the line like its a flood. if it doesnt look at the pump and lines. if it does look at the carb.

Try removing the fuel line from pump to carb(at the pump)put a piece of fuel line from the pump into a jar/gas can and turn over a few times. See if there is gas in the jar/can,if not, remove the line from the tank to the pump and try to siphon the gas through the line,or better yet, disconnect the line inside the cab and try to blow air through the line(still disconnected at fuel pump). If nothing then you have a hole or a clogged line.If it blows free then pull the sending unit from the tank and see if you have a clog there. If everything else works fine and you have GAS in the tank, you probably have a bad pump. Good Luck and post your findings.

Take the line of at the carb and run it into a bucket like stated above. If your getting fuel your carb is messed up. Clean the carb and jets with carb cleaner. Same thing happend to my truck, turned out the carb was full of dirt.

Allright, finally got a chance to get under the truck, tried all the ideas mentioned above. Went ahead and replaced all the rubber connecting lines between teh tank and the pump just to be on the safe side. All the lines seem good, but I still am not getting fuel flowing. Tried taking the line that feeds into the pump(suction) and setting it in a jar of gas with the end submerged, and it didn't drop the level at all when I turned the engine over. So best I can figure it is the pump.
I started lookin around tryin to find a replacement, and that brought up some more questions. The pump that is on there now has a screw cap about as big around as a soda can that covers the fuel filter, and the lines connect on the side, looks more modern than the OEM pump, which doesn't have a filter cover of that size, as far as i can tell, and has the fuel lines connecting to two seperate cylinders extending from the bottom of the pump.
Is there any advantage to running the style of pump I have currently, or would I be just as well off with the OEM pump? Also, I know this isnt the marketplace, but if anyone has a spare layin around that they are just dying to get rid of lemme know.

What year, model and engine are we talking about?
Generally, the pump with the filter should be the original type, and the one with "2 cylinders" sounds like the newer type.

Car fuel pumps don't have the large filter on the bottom, truck fuel pumps do. I was told a while back that the truck fuel pumps flow a little more fuel too. In fact, years ago when I was driving my '68 XL with a 390, I was experiencing fuel delivery issues at high RPM (which means the engine was going flat at high highway speeds). I replaced the car-type pump with a truck pump, and I gained about 10 MPH on the top end. (at least until the valves started to float, but that's another issue.)

I can't find the part number at the moment, but you can get a Carter "Muscle Car" pump that has the filter on it and flows over 100 GPH. I believe it is listed for a 427 Fairlane. It is what I have on mine.
