Re: re: smoking 360
I was going to try to install the intake manifold gaskets myself but either haven't gotten around to it yet or didn't have time or got distracted. I have a chance for my neighbor who is a mechanic to come over on Sunday and help me install it. He was supposed to install the lifters and push rods and put the thing back together. He took it apart. All I did was take the valve covers off.Finleyphoto wrote:What's the latest?

He has said he was going to work on it a few different days and never got to it so I am losing hope in getting him to help me.

Failing that, pick up a copy of "How to rebuild your Big Block Ford - By Steve Christ" download the Edelbrock instructions and have ea go at it...

Well, I didn't get to the truck today. Well, I guess I made a mistake by asking him what he'd charge to do the job before hand. Money may not be as exciting as gifts. What about some gift certificates to a nice restaurant for him and his wife instead?DuckRyder wrote:

I like the idea of getting "how to rebuild your big block ford" and the edelbrock instructions though. I feel like if I could get that gasket on I 'd be over the hump.
I actually drove out to southern Bexar county to look at a couple of acres I am thinking about purchasing. It is two lots in a small subdivision. Also, we've been accumulating a brush pile near the alley here in town and tomorrow is brush collection day for our neighborhood. I had to move it away from the telephone pole and tree it was piled up against. I'm lucky I didn't get cited for it. My neighbors actually started adding to the pile recently.

There is nothing to catch up. I need to get out there and
put the intake manifold back on. In fact I got a couple
of hours left today. I can go mess with it. Who knows
maybe my neighbor might be free tomorrow. I kind of
gave up on him though.
I'll keep yall up to date on any developements.

re: smoking 360
Today I decided to install the intake manifold back on the engine. I downloaded the instructions from summit racing's website for the edelbrock performer intake. Anyway I sprayed gasket adhesive on both sides of the gasket and some on the head. After letting it sit a few minutes I placed the two gaskets on either side of the engine. I put a 1/4 inch bead of gasket maker on the front and rear of the engine as the instructions said. I borrowed a torque wrench from my neighbor so I could tighten the bolts down to 25 foot pounds. After setting the intake down carefully on the engine I started inserting the bolts and began to snug them down. There was one bolt on the very front of the engine next to the battery which was very hard to remove when we took the intake manifold off. It was also very difficult to put in. I began to tighten it down and it snapped off. All the bolts went in fairly easily except that one and now it's broken off in the hole.
I think I'm going to have to remove the intake and start all over with new gaskets and a new tube of gasket maker. I don't have any tools to get that broken screw out. It is in there pretty tight also.
I also decided to tap on the lifter springs just to see what it sounded like. We took out the spark plugs already. When I hit the spring with my rubber mallet I can hear a light ping sound from each lifter except two which didn't do anything. I decided to hit them a little harder. They both
eventyally did move. Did yall say that the valves can hit the pistons?
Otherwise we haven't done any tests on the engine yet. I just wanted to get the intake manifold and pushrods and rocker arms back on first.

I'm not sure if any of the bolt is sticking up. It broke off near the end. I'll have to take the intake back off to see. I might try that 'easy out' or or bolt extractor thing. In fact I think my cousin may have those anyway.fordman wrote:you cant trust anyone with tools. once you get the intake back off try some vise grips on the bolt that is left sticking up. once you do get it out. blow air in the hole and chase the threads with a tap. and then put a new bolt back in it.

re: smoking 360
Whatever you do:
DO NOT break the easy out off in the bolt...
Once you get the broken part out charse the threads with a tap (a special bottoming tap specifically designed for chasing threads if you can locate one.)

re: smoking 360
that bolt goes right into an oil drain passage, so you need to pull the intake to fix it. After you drill it you need to clean all the metal out of the oil drain passage, top of head, and lifter valley.
When the going gets tough, your doing something right.
