Hi There,
I am having a problem with my rag joint. I replaced it a couple of months ago and it just deteriorated again.
Well, I replaced it and it just broke again.
So, what I did was bolt the rag joint between the steering column and the steering box. Instead of the steering column bolding to the rag joint, I moved it over so it bolts to the steering box connector.
I didn't use the regular connectors. When I used the peg that came with the kit it split the rag joint. So, it is not connected anymore.
Is this simply a short fix, or can I drive my truck like that?
Jeff

re: Rag Joint Problem
I wouldn't drive it too long like that. If it goes out while driving down the road, you're basically along for the ride at that point!
It sounds like your steering shaft isnt aligned properly with the box. If it were me I would pull the column out and have a look at at the bearing in the lower end of the tube.
One other possibility: Did you switch from manual to power sterering or vice versa? Is so you need a different bracket to hold the bottom of the column at the firewall. Using the wrong bracket will cause misalignment and rapid death of the rag joint.
As far as where to get a good rag joint, I got mine from National parts Depot.

It cost me $56 but it is a stout well made unit.
You definetly want to get that fixed properly.

re: Rag Joint Problem
First thing that comes to mind is the cab corners and if there bad like im
thinking they are untill they are repaired you will be doing it alot!
How are your cab corners?
P.S There are some rag joints that are made better than others with
bigger studs that fit (some) trucks better than others!

Cut ( FOUR ) pieces of an old ford truck frame that has been junked, fit them to the inside of your good frame, add weld and bolts, the leafs are now inboard, time for the (big WIDE tires)!
Oh yeah (Tubbs)
