Steering column alignment

Post by drew22 »

When I sit in my truck (71 xlt 2wd p.s.) the steering wheel is off center to the left. I tried to adjust the bracket to the right but it wont go any more (looks like the bracket is also connected to the firewall). When it goes through the firewall, the column is right of center going through the hole of the little plate and rubber seal. That makes me wonder if the steering gear is adjustable and needs to go left, or what is going on. Any thoughts? thanks, Drew

It's completely normal and all our trucks are like that. It's by design. Since the frame rail is virtually directly under the driver, and the steering box is mounted to the inside of that, if the column were to come out at a right angle to the cab wall, it would just be too far away from the driver's door, and closer to the center of the truck. It has to angle back towards the driver's-side a bit to keep you from sitting practically in the middle of the cab.

Actually, it's just subtle enough that most people don't even notice it. Good eye! ;)

I don't want to give em a heart-attack. That is what would happen if I answered the door in the buff. Heck it almost scares me to death when I step out of the shower and look in the mirror.~Mancar1~

I'm on my second 67 F-100. As Keith said, they're all like that. This little design trait used to drive me crazy. In those years, fit and finish were simply not what they are now. Part of the charm.
