1972 302 power steer belt rubbing lower hose?

Post by rjewkes »

Is this a common thing on the 302?

it rubs the hose down to the corded nylon strings/belts just wondering if this is something built into the 302 design or if i need something thicker than a 2" nut as an outer spacer?

IMO there's definitely something wrong, belts should not rub hoses. Can you post a pic?

i think you have the wrong side exit water pump. they come with exits on either side and it sounds like you have the wrong one on your 302.

is the 302 supposed to come out on the passenger side? this one comes out on the same spot as the 360 and the lower radiator inlet/outlet is on the same side of the truck. looks like it just rubs against the belt. as i said the nut used to space it from the block looks to be a 1 7/8" nut like the ones from the front wheel beerings only its not a castle nut. I know that ain't factory there and the belt does not line up perfect with the water pump pulley, it looks like its just starting to walk off the pulley. i'll get a pic in the mourning.

Mine is really close/almost touching. I worry about stuff like that so a while back I put a manly sized zip tie around the base of the fuel pump and ran it around the bottom hose. Have an inch or two space now.

Same here. I have a 70 w/add on p/s. What i done is loosen the hose at pump and twist it then retighten . That will pull it away from the belt. Make sure you have the spring in the bottom radiator hose. It will heep it from kinking. That will give you about a inch and half clearance.

Mine only works with the zip tie because I have the accordion looking flexible hoses and can pull them where I need them. For some reason local vendors can't seem to match what I need in pre-formed hoses. Oh well.

Good Luck rjewkes.

sounds like the three of us do. wonder why this is like that.

oh well new problem anyways.

Found out both of my new belts where loose so no chargig and no cooling last night while i was doing 70 on the highway. Last night it stopped running, had it towed home and this mourning checked the oil and it was a quart low and slightly burnt smelling but no other fluids mixed into it.

but it knocks like a mother when running now what do you guys know/think? an oil change doubl check the plugs and go or hjave i realy screwed something up?

I know there is a chance of warped heads what else could be wrong? could the knock just be burnt oil?

Is knock coming from upper or lower engine? If you can't tell take a long screwdriver hold up to ear and different areas of engine, should help you isolate- but normally a knock is not good.
