Need to know what I should sell 240 engine for ???

Post by Matrix549 »

I am restoring a '71.

I am having the 240 inline 6 pulled along with manual trans, steering column with 3 on the tree, and new manual steering gear.... All in great running condition...

Does anyone know off hand what I should charge for the complete setup??

Go look on eBay. Maybe you will find out.

Why are you trashing the 240, with an Offy Dual port manifold, Holley 600 cfm 4V and a header for 51 bucks you will get a 15 second in the quarter truck that gets 17 or 18 in town and on the highway..

I'm not trashing the 240. I have bought a 1978 F150 to use for parts on the '71.....

Just looking for someone that could use the complete set up.

The last 240 I had got $30 in scrap metal. 240's/300's are great engines, but they do not fetch any money used. There's no demand for an engine that lasts forever.

Thanks for your honesty. Just don't know whether to let the guy thats doing all the work keep all the extra parts or whether it would be worth me hauling it all back about 2 hours a month from now..

True and if I had a 240 here it would be my spare for my hotrod truck 390. Most times the 240 would live in the truck for months on end. Leaving the 390 for special times when power was needed like the drag strip.

If you could easily ship a 240 and tranny, I'm sure it would go for a couple hundred on ebay, but since it is so heavy, there is no "larger" market for it.

You manual steering gear has some value, but that also is going to be suspicious to a lot of buyers as its a 37 y/o box. Most of us would think its probably already mostly shot. So again, ebay is not a great option.

If you can store the stuff and live somewhere close to a larger metro area, you'll eventually find someone that needs those parts. Put up some "parts for sale" listings here, over at fordsix.com and at fordtruk.com. Then be patient. Craigslist is also a good resource.

In any case, as another inline lover, please don't scrap it, especially if its a running engine. A 240 core may not be worth much, but I'd give you $100 for a running engine in a heartbeat, so long as it is local......

You guys have really got me thinking.... See I don't mind the 240 at all... I'm not looking for horse power.... I don't know that many girls do, ya know... It's just I've already bought this '78 and I was really just looking for power steering & brakes... And a Auto Trans, the tilt steering column was an added bonus........The truck just happens to have the 302 V8 and I thought what the heck I'll have them put that in as well....... I work with the guy I bought the '71 from and he wouldn't even let me buy it until he put a new manual steering gear in it.......I think I scared him when I got behind the wheel to drive and he was on the passenger side.....Heck it had been since 1985 that I had drove a car with drum brakes and manual steering, I was all over the place.....

Both the 302 and 240 are good engines, I think the six is a better "truck motor".

You'll sell the 302 for much more $$ than the 240. You can bolt the automatic tranny that is behind the 302 right up to the 240.

Is the automatic a C6? That would take quite a lot of HP from the 240, and though the 240 is a tough little engine that pulls very well with a manual tranny, I can tell from experience, it can be a pretty doggy when coupled to an automatic tranny, just be warned.

It is good that you have a donor vehicle. PS, PB, disk brakes etc all are doable, whether you keep the 240 or swap to a 302.

Keep posting and asking ?? and you'll get answers.

EDIT: you must use a zero balanced flexplate with the 240, so the flexplate from the 302 will NOT work. Its a $40 item, or you can get one used for much less (I happen to have one I'd let you have for the shipping and a donation to fordification).

Was that with the old or the new gear box, when you wandered? I had a king pin get tight on my F350 and I could drive it no problem until it ate the manual steering box.

It was the old gear box.....Pretty sure it was original from '71.. It didn't bother him to drive it that way....He only took junk off to the yard occasionaly he said.... But since we are such good pals at work he said he would feel bad if something happened to me so he bought a new gear box to put in and we split the cost of the gear box...... He may even be buying the 240 engine back from me.........He's a true Ford Fan as well..
