I have not yet gotten a fuel gauge/regulator on there. If the following isn't the problem, I will.

So it looks like a combination of factors...

1. I'm missing part # 9569 (washer),
2. I think have a needle that's not compatible with the seat,
3. I have a retainer that's also not compatible with the seat (looks like it' be compatible with a "screw-top" seat, not a "bolt-like-top" seat, in that it's designed with a curve (to accommodate a cylinder)).

The top of my seat looks like a bolt (not a screw, as some of the graphics I've seen in this thread look like). However, my needle looks like it'd be compatible with a "philips head" screw, in that it has 4 ridges along the cylinder. Is anyone familiar with this type of needle seat?

What do your needle, needle seat & retainer look like? Are there several variants and is it possible that I did get a needle & retainer from one variation and a needle seat from another?

Does the retainer clip down over the edge of the seat and stay there? If not then there's your problem. It doesn't look like it would. The needle looks ok to me; it's supposed to have the ridges on it so the fuel can get by. Does it fit fairly snug in the seat? It shouldn't be able to wobble around too much. I feel you are close to an answer....

I feel I'm close too! I'm just so damn anxious to get it up & running!

To answer your question: there is no real 'edge' for the seat to 'clip down' on. Which in theory allows for the retainer, float, float shaft and needle assembly to raise up indefinitely (and the carb to overflow)... sound logical?

What can I do to keep that retainer down/clipped to the seat??? Small spec of super glue? rubber band? sodder? or something once everything is in place and while the bowl is empty?

What will not deteriorate in a small bowl of gasoline? And is this a method you recommend??

That retainer clip will not lock into the groove in the seat? That is definitely a problem if not...

If you cannot obtain the proper retainer and/or needle and seat combination, perhaps a bit of stainless steel safety wire around the backside of the seat would work.

I honestly think my needle seat & retainer are from two different variations. The 'groove' is not nearly deep enough to hold that retainer down/in. I don't think I have any 'safety wire' but I think I could find a qualified paperclip!

For what I am thinking something more pliable than a paper clip might be in order... perhaps a bread tie stripped of its plastic outer skin leaving only the wire...

A small wire tie might work as well, although the life expectancy immersed in fuel might be suspect...

Remember if it fails, you got fuel all over a hot engine, so consider it temporary…

You don't have the correct seat if the retainer won't clip into it. You probably need the round type seat with the screwdriver slot in it, as it has a deep groove for the retainer to snap into. Don't rig it; you'll regret it later. Just go look at a rebuild kit from the parts store and see which seat it comes with. If it has the right one, snatch that sucker up. If not, I'm sure someone here (maybe me) would have one laying around for you.

Now in the market for the correct (screw-driver-like-top) needle seat for my 2BBL carb. If anyone has one from a recent carb rebuild/etc, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!
