300 six stuff
I just pulled the 300 that has been spewing oil from god-knows-where at above 45 MPH, and replaced it with a marked up over stock 300 my buddy gave me. After fighting with it a long time to determine why I had a miss on number four, i decided the exhaust valve has recessed itself into the head.
If someone has their magic ovaltine ford decoder ring handy, is there some way i can determine what year the engine i pulled was? It's got various random crap on it, so I doubt it's a '70 like the pickup, but I have my doubts as to wether it's got stelite seats in it. (if not I'm just going to go find a 240 head....)
Also, does anyone have a full set of blueprint dimensions for the rods in a 300? I'm considering having some offset cap rods made, so when I rebuild mine it'll be ready to accept the supercharger.

Re: 300 six stuff
Here's the nasty trick to discover if you have the same problem as two out of the last three 300s i dealt with had. Pull the vavle cover. pull the rocker arms. if you can't see the difference, take a machinist's square and set it level from the top of the valve to the sealing surface for the vavle cover gasket. check the height of the exhaust vavles. if you've got one (or more) that sit high, there's your problem. they recess into the head and the motor will run like crud, and not tune up no matter what you do.

Re: 300 six stuff
I registered there a couple months ago and had to hound the adm several times before I got my confirmation.
I also had a 300 pound out the valve seat on a rebuilt 72. I had even asked the builder and he said don't worry about it. It ruined a head I had spent a good deal of time in porting. I think hard seats started in 73 but not real sure.

head in mine is a '74.
I might have some trouble hounding the admin of that site, if he doesn't have contact info somewhere.

Re: 300 six stuff
If you google Fordsix you can get a coverpage that nonregistered used can see. They have contact info at the bottom of the home page. Right now the site seems to be down and emails to the adm. bounce.
BTW, what is "marked up over stock"?

that doesn't work. Sift around and find an address for 46ford something, that is the guy who will respond.

I figured that's what you meant, just never heard that term used, are you from England? sounds like a term they would use.heviarti wrote:hopped up? hot rodded? just a mite heavier duty?willowbilly3 wrote:BTW, what is "marked up over stock"?
Anyway, let me know if you got in a fordsix, I found the good email address that got me in after the hounding. You really need to be there if you are building one.

Re: 300 six stuff
No, Not a scone-head. I'm from Idaho. I've been away a bit, as I have been working on the ranch. I haven't been to town, seeing as I blew the third gear out of my bmw, in addition to the fourth i already blew. Stupid ZF transmissions. In my absence I also took some time to go and jack my flatbed dodge back from the folk who were holding it hostage. (I was losing sleep over it) Still no dice on for six forums. methinks it may be time for a new moderator who can differentiate his alimentary canal from an irrigation canal.

I'm not sure why the hassle to get signed up but you can still read all the stuff and the FAQ in the 300 section has tons of good advice.
