Drivetrain shutter
This is weird...and I'm hoping someone has experienced the same thing. I have a shutter that I can feel on the gas pedal and gear shifter when I start from a standing stop. It is more pronounced on hard takeoffs and is almost non existent when I drive away slowly. I have a 70 F250 4x4 highboy with a NP 435 tranmission and a dana 24 transfer case. Both units have been rebuilt recently, but the shutter still exists. I have been thinking that the pinion bearing might be bad, (I have a dana 60 rear) but a friend said the nature of the dana 24 without a support bracket makes it move around when pulling or hauling. I was thinking about changing the insulators on the transfer case to see if the shutter subsides or lessens. Anyone have a thought on this problem.

You're friend's absolutely right. Go with polyurathane T-case mounts. Jeff's bronco graveyard sells them. That should solve your problem. If not, the dana 24 does not take well to adding a strut (there's no good place to mount it). Instead of fooling with a strut on the 24 it's easier and more econimical to swap to a 205 case for which the factory strut rods are plentiful and work great.

Didn't some D24s come stock with a strut I have seen a few with them on. My neighbor has one on his 73 F250. It is stock because he doens't modify his stuff. They mount them on the bottom plate on the Tcase.averagef250 wrote:You're friend's absolutely right. Go with polyurathane T-case mounts. Jeff's bronco graveyard sells them. re: Drivetrain shutter
Dustin,
You are the man...you were dead on with the bushings...I ordered the polyurethane bushings from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard. I installed them today. The shutter is gone and the drive train is absolutely vibration free. Please take a gold star out of petty cash for your advice. Thanks a bunch.

re: Drivetrain shutter
The insultators (bushings) were $48.00. Jeffs shipped them in about 4 days to California. They are polyurethane and work much better than stock. I was able to install them without dropping any of the driveshafts or pulling the transfer case out completely. It was a trick my wife refers to as a McGyver move. Took about two hours total. Well worth the price and effort.

Glad it worked! Don't know for 100% sure about the T-case strut on those 24's Greg. I've seen a few trucks with some homeade strut thing, but nothing factory. I fooled with a strut for the 24 in my truck for years. The only place to mount it was off the PTO cover and it didn't work so hot. After I burned up my 3rd 24 case, I switched a 205 in and added the factory strut. Works great!

Don't have a strut on it either but would like to come up with somethin eventually...averagef250 wrote:Glad it worked! Don't know for 100% sure about the T-case strut on those 24's Greg. re: Drivetrain shutter
I had the same problem with te rubber style insulators. They like to rip out when you drag the T-case I was wondering if they made the poly bushings and this site again answers any questions I may have
